    Description

Available in this listing is an exceptional agatized petrified wood cut specimen slab originating from the Owyhee Mountains in Oregon from the Vale Wood Deposit! The preservation of the original organic wood's growth structure is perfectly detailed via opal and agate mineralization allowing the viewer to get an excellent view of the ring segments. The color of the agatized wood is quite pleasing in highly contrasting black, red, pink, white and tan. This specimen clearly exhibits cellular replacement by mineralization as evidenced in the magnified photographs. I have only known two or three individuals in my life who had hunted and dug this wood and met all of them long after they were physically able to venture out to the location and definitely unable to adequately describe exactly where it was (or maybe still is?)! As of today, the old-time diggers I have known have all passed away and not one of my associates, even those in their ninth decade of life, is privy to the deposit's location! I do know that it originated in a large fossil producing area of the Owyhee High Desert somewhere between Adrian, Oregon going out towards Grassy Mountain and HooDoo Basin and continuing towards Vale, Oregon. I have hunted the land personally for over a decade and have yet to find any evidence of old digs or the location-defining matrix of red sand. The display slab piece measures 115mm by 107mm by 13mm tapered to 7mm. The fossil wood weighs 7.7 ounces. All photographs taken while the petrified Vale Wood was wet excluding the final two photographs which portray both sides of the slab while dry. I will combine shipping for multiple purchases as long as the specimens can be packaged in a manner that minimizes the potential for damage.
