Conifer with large spike knot (Pinales order)Trout Creek Formation Miocene
Private Ranch near McDermitt, Oregon/Nevada border
This slab has really excellent definition of the growth rings and a very large knot emanating from the tree when it was still young. A very successful dig on the private portion of Zimmermann Ranch in 2019 uncovered a trove of excellent and diverse fossil woods and we think we got some of the best ones! This dig was by a member of the Zimmermann family on the land owned by the family. We note that public Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to the family ranch and open to rockhounding are also sometimes referred to as Zimmermann Ranch, even though they are actually public lands that have been leased to the family for cattle grazing. We recently heard that the family has sold the ranch so it is uncertain if any more digs (like the one that produced this excellent specimen) will be conducted on the privately owned portions of the ranch. It is a really outstanding display slice with a very impressive spike knot! We note that this is a professionally repaired specimen by one of our favorite digger/cutters who assisted the Zimmermann family in the dig. This specimen is reported to have come from a hole dug by backhoe down to around 14 feet deep. It measures
6.25" x 5.25" on the polished face and is a slab 1/2" thick.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don't guess and when we don't know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
