** Here’s an incredibly pretty-patterned slab of coniferous wood from a new dig in 2015.  One of our favorite diggers/cutters was authorized to use heavy equipment on a private ranch midway between the McDermitt Airport (Bretz Mine) site and the renowned Zimmermann Ranch diggings (both of which are west of Mc/Dermitt, Nevada along the Disaster Peak Road).  This new dig, down almost 20 feet, uncovered some really great specimens and we were fortunate to get the best of the very best.  The patterning in this specimen is the result of natural bleaching by groundwater of previously-precipitated colorants.  The clue is that the natural bleaching follows tiny cracks in the wood (already in existence as desiccation cracking prior to petrification) which allowed entrance of the groundwater. This gives the slab wonderful character and individuality.  It measures 4" X 4” on the polished face and it is a 3/8” thick slab.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
