Description
Chalcedony (agate) cast of tree root (Incertae sedis
)
Trout Creek Formation, Miocene
Texas Springs, Nevada
This is a really excellent root cast with some of the emanating rootlets leading off at steep angles (up to 90 degrees). Texas Springs has long been a favorite locality for pink "limb" casts although most of those limbs are in fact root casts. This is a great example of the root morphology with rootlets going off in disparate directions. It is not pink but it is a polished specimen (see our photo of the polished end of this specimen). There is no remaining anatomical structure preserved in the specimen - it is indeed a cast. If you seek the unusual and unique for your collection, this is a nice addition to your collection. It measures
1.5” x 1" on the polished face (cross section) and it is 4” in length.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
